Who and what is a Canadian Citizen

A Canadian Citizen can:

  • Vote in Canadian elections
  • Apply for a Canadian passport
  • Hold dual Citizenship (Country-Dependent)
  • Live and work anywhere in Canada

Canadian Citizenship does not expire.

Ways to Gain Canadian Citizenship

To apply by Naturalisation, you must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) in the last five years as a Permanent Resident before the date you sign/ submit your Citizenship application. Additionally, some time spent in Canada as a temporary resident (worker/student), before becoming a Permanent Resident, may count towards this physical presence.

Citizenship By Descent

Born Outside of Canada Before 15 December 2025.

An application for a Canadian Citizenship Certificate is now possible through more than one generation, since the changes to the Citizenship Act: Bill C-3.

Key requirements:

  • There must be an ‘Original’ Canadian as a direct ancestor (e.g. grandparent, great grandparent etc)
  • This person must have:
    • been born in Canada or
    • obtained Canadian citizenship before their child's birth
  • Future generations do not have to have been born in Canada to have a claim for Canadian Citizenship

A child born to a Canadian Citizen has a claim from birth and is a Canadian Citizen..
